Barnawapara Wildlife sanctuary, is named after Bar and Nawapara forest villages, which are in the heart of the sanctuary. It is a land mass of undulating terrain dotted with numerous low and high hillocks well forested area of North-eastern corner of Raipur district. The Tributaries of Mahanadi are the source of water. River Balamdehi forms the western boundary and Jonk River forms the north-eastern boundary of the Sanctuary. The well stocked forests of the sanctuary classified as teas, sal and mixed forests. This sanctuary is famous for the frequent sighting of the Indian bison (Gaur) Cheetal, Sambhar, Neelgai, Wild boar are commonly seen. Bar-Nawapara boosts of over 150 species Birds.

Location: Spread over an area of about 245 sq km in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its rich vegetation and unique wildlife species. The reserve is about 100kms from Raipur and about 45kms from Mahasamund city. One is allowed to take a private vehicle in the sanctuary; however, taking a guide is mandatory.

Flora in Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary: The sanctuary is replete with Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests and Bamboo is amongst the most commonly spotted tree here. Sal, Teak and other tropical dry deciduous trees like Tendu, Terminalia, Mahua, Ber and Semal trees are also common sights in the reserve.

Fauna in Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary: The major wildlife of the Barnawapara Sanctuary include Tigers, Sloth Bear, Flying Squirrels, Jackals, Four-horned Antelopes, Leopards, Chinkara, Black Buck, Jungle Cat, Barking Deer, Porcupine, Monkey, Bison, Striped Hyena, Wild Dogs, Chital, Sambar, Nilgai, Gaur, Muntjac, Wild Boar, Cobra, Python to name a few. The sanctuary also has a large population of birds that include Parrots, Bulbul, White-rumped Vultures, Green Avadavat, Lesser Kestrels, Peafowl, Wood Peckers, Racket-tailed Drongos, Egrets, and Herons. Bird watching in Barnawapara is one of the most enjoyed activities.
