The Kalchuri Kings had initially made this region their administrative capital. Thechief deityof the Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple is Lord Shiva. A stone inscription reveals that it was built in 1402 by Hajiraj Naik during the rule of Brahmdeo Rai, son of Kalchuri King Ramehandra. Brahmdeo Rai’s monumental script in Sanskrit is still preserved at the Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum.
